Warning: I'm weird.

« on: July 30, 2010, 09:59:04 AM »

Hey!  Where can I find a concert ocarina that can play almost as good as a Spencer oc?
I'm trying to start up a concert group in my town and I wanted to find a good concert ocarina that will not go over $100 too much.
Any help is appreciated!

Well a concert ocarina just means that it plays in a specific key and thus can play together with other instruments. So really, any good quality oc is a concert ocarina. If you want a 12 hole Alto C ocarina (the same key as Spencer's), Focalink's will cost you $70 and change after shipping if you get it from Songbird...Songbird also has a couple 12 AC's of his own that will cost you $100 plus shipping. STL has many different 12 AC's to choose from and they're all under $100 if I'm not mistaken. Any of these would technically be considered a concert ocarina. If cost is your biggest concern, Focalink would be the best bang for your buck.

The only feature that all of these share that makes them different from a Spencer is that they are rising breath instruments - that is, you have to blow harder as you go up the oc's range. Spencer's ocs use the same breath pressure throughout the range. Imho, a rising breath is going to suit your needs much more often than an even-breath oc...Rising breath ocs allow for more dynamics, and thus more emotion, in the music you play. Even breath ocs have their place for sure, but I think most people will agree that a rising breath is preferable for most songs.

I know you said something under $100, but whenever I think of concert series I of a loud Ocarina.

So I'm suggesting the MapAram(Sorry if I misspelled it). It is said to be very loud, but it is loud to resonate the sound at huge places, so I suggest that I guess.

Or you could go with one of the Purple Clay Ocarina. There are some of them on STL

as gytech mentioned, concert ocarina usually needs the quality of being able to project its sound well.

In this case, both the maparam and purple clay project very well and both have my recommendation.

Now the question is do you want the Maparam that takes a little less breath and increases the endurance of your performance, or do you want the Purple Clay which has more breath requirement and thus gives you more room to bend pitches and be more emotive?

@HieronRemade: Thanks for the advice!

@gytech: EDIT: scratch what I said earlier.  purple clay is more in my price range than MapAram.

@Sergeant_Dragon: Thanks for telling me that the purple clay needs more breath, I honestly didn't know that.  Endurance is something I can work on if I get the purple clay, I'm just worried about going over the hundred mark.
