Don't mess with a tentacle

« on: July 30, 2010, 05:16:50 AM »

So what I'm thinking of maybe doing is putting together most of my video's to show my progress to help motivate beginners!  Wink

However, I'm not quite sure how I want to make it and how I want the result to be.  Huh

I'm thinking of having text pictures before the video clips to tell a little about them. like how many tries I needed to play it correct may be something some people may find nice to know.  Shocked

And at the same time making it like a "story", so that you follow my progress... blah.. can't finish that sentence!

A thing to add may be that I think this type of motivational video only helps if the recordings are made by one person, and not a video made from several people's recordings.   Roll Eyes

I would probably recommend Sam, David, Ubizmo, Suba, and some of the other more skilled ocarinaists than me to make a video like this to help beginners stay motivated! Cheesy

It's all part of the evil plan of making the whole world full of ocarinas. But for that we need a whole lot of highly skilled ocarinaists.   Roll Eyes

And for those who didn't know, here's my youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/totten94

Please give me tips and tell me what to include/exclude in this video.

Motivational or instructional is my question. Is it one or the other or both?

Do you want actual instructions and tips for getting started on the ocarina?

I'm not thinking of instructional!

I'm thinking of showing my own progress to help motivate beginners.
I guess it's a way of reminding them that even the most skilled players was a beginner once..

so maybe something like, what was your first song, what was your first ocarina, what was your introduction to the ocarina, what did you do when you wanted to practice, how often did you play it, why did you choose the ocarina, why do you keep playing, did the ocarina bring anything important or life changing to you?

There's a few questions. You want to make this into an actual production? Perhaps you could PM and get in talks with David yourself and it could be a huge project eh?

A huge project like that seems interesting, but I don't think it would have the same effect.
I think people doing their own video's like that gives the best effect because you follow one person.

and thanks for those questions! Cheesy

I think this is a great idea!

The ideal motivator for me would be a video of the same person, with clips of them playing at the beginning of their ocarina career (playing fairly horribly) and then where they are today (playing beautifully). Unfortunately, I doubt very many people record or save videos of their playing while they still see themselves as pathetic newbs, so it might be hard to find them. But a before / after video, if possible even using the same ocarina and song, would be pretty inspiring.

I am willing to do this! I just got my Ocarina two days ago, and I'll post a video of me playing tomorrow! Unedited, and uncut, my friend!

By the way, anyone know any free video editing software? I want to be able use it for later on. But I plan on making all of my videos without any audio effects put in, and only backtracks at the very most

Unless you have a Mac, your most likely choices for video editing software are Movie Maker and Wax 2.0. There are a couple other ones, but in my experience they're the only ones worth spending time on.

Well, if you try to do split screen, DO NOT USE MOVIE MAKER!!!  It creates and Epic Fail.

I prefer Zwei-Stein for that, but what you use is up to you, just don't use Movie Maker, unless you aren't doing splitscreen and collabs.

Split screen is possible in WMM, but it takes a lot of patience.  This video's split screen was done with it and a free plugin I found online (I can't remember the name of it).

AHH!!!  You don't know how to do it either?  Hmm...  You just put the code that's after the watch?v= in the Youtube tags, so that will make this.

I think, If you just show someone my first videos,
and then my latest few videos, and mention the fact I have only played little over a year.

It really could provide a great amount of motivation.

Either way, Im definately up for doing something to help beginners. And Im gonna be sure to message david, about a segment on octalk. Where I could provide useful, and motivational tips, to beginners
