Hey fellow OcTalkers,

It's time for assignment 6!

To participate, all you need to do is write a song and post it in this thread.  I'd prefer that you provide it in sheet or tab form, along with a recording, video, or midi if possible.  That way, others can try your song out!

Submitted entries will be scored according to the outline below.

Here's how it will work:

Participation = 30 points

Theme of the week:
Mixolydian Mode (modern)

See Minor Scales and using them.

For bonus points:
-Include a backtrack! (10 pts)
-Make it at least 30 seconds long! (10 pts)
-Make it an authentic Mixolydian Mode by starting and ending on G (you may include sections of other keys if you want)! (20 pts)

Extra challenge:
-Include a section of Plagal Hypomixolydian Mode by starting on D, but ending on G! (30 pts)

You may submit an entry at any time, but remember the next assignment starts next Monday!

Learn more about Mixolydian Mode here!
Read more about Musical Modes!

Submitted entries will be added to this post following this sentence:

Xavior704: Mixolydian Melody for 100 points!
Poltergeist: Sonnons les cloches! - PDF - Score - Backtrack for 100 points!

So what you're saying is that we can't add any sharps or flats except for B flat? And that we start and end on G

Yes, if you want to stay completely in the authentic Mixolydian mode.  However, you may include sections in the middle in different keys which could have sharps or flats and still get credit for the authentic mixolydian mode.

You two are misinterpreting each other!

So what you're saying is that we can't add any sharps or flats except for B flat? And that we start and end on G

Actually: No! I guess the Wikipedia article is a bit misleading about that. You can build a mixolydian scale on any tone. (And that tone then is the note the piece should start and end with.) The example scale in the box is built on C, and if you build it on C, the B is flat. But historically authentic (and that is what turbo meant) is the mixolydian scale built on G. But if you build it on G, there is no flat, the B is natural. Look at the text examples near the box with the sheet music example.

Well, I have absolutly NO IDEA if I did this right, but I have a snare in the backtrack, a part where it starts with d and ends on g and the first note of the song and the last note are g and finally it's past 30 seconds long. In other words, I went for a perfect score. ( that would have saved me some typing) anyhoo, here's the link.
EDIT Sorry guys, the video won't work anymore

Nice job!  I liked the melody!

By the way, I noticed that you are looking down while playing, did you write the song out?  If so, it would be great if you would post the notes as well so that others may try it!

Sorry, I don't look down because of music, it's just how I play my ocarina. I also don't really know how to post them, sorry.

Oh, I was just wondering if you had written it out and were reading it.

Hmm, it says that you have removed the video from Youtube?

Yes, yes you do.

By the  everyone, week 7 will start next Monday to give people more time for week 6.  And to give me time to figure out what to do for it...  I've got an idea though.

Here's what I came up with: Sonnons les cloches!

I decided that a medieval mode needed a medieval form. So this is a kind of virelai that a medieval troubadour might have used:

Refrain: ab
Stanza: cd cd eb (cd being hypomixolydian)
Refrain: ab

The backing track is mainly a combination of drones on G and D (or G and C during the hypomixolydian part) and an organum a fifth below the ocarina part. (The Alto C ocarina sounding one octave higher than written.) The title means "Let's ring the bells!" I couldn't come up with a better one, so I decided to name it after my backing track. I can't stand piano music, so I did something different...  Grin

Very nice work!  The bells and glockenspiel gave it a very interesting sound.  Almost like a misty path among the mountains.

Thanks! "Misty mountain path" would have been a nice title. Perhaps next time...
