Vibrato or echo?
«

When listening to some of the oc players on utube, some have a definate vibrato or echo, is this done after the movie is made and added? How do they do that? Ocarina's don't sound like that normally.
Here is a good example:

Thanks

He uses both vibrato and an echo effect in this video.
The vibrato is a technique of the player. It works by periodically changing your breath pressure. This is done by vibrating with your diaphragm. Perhaps you can find some good hints how to develop this technique if you search Google (or maybe even YouTube) for "flute vibrato tutorial" or something. It's a very essential technique for flute players.
The other thing he uses is a sort of echo effect. This is something done electronically by manipulating the signal coming from the microphone.

Yah most people do both...I do vibrato (which as Poltergeist said, I do myself), and I almost always add a little reverb via audacity.

Vibrato is a technique that every ocarinst should learn, just like every singer needs to be able to use vibrato. It's just the way it's done. IMO, it's one of the marks of a person still just learning to play is the inability to use or control vibrato well, or at all. That is something that would sound the same whether live or recorded.
Echo, however, or reverb, is an effect usually added to the recording afterward. Unless the recording is done a room with really good acoustics. I add reverb to my recordings because I think it makes the ocarina sound clearer and more consistent with the backtrack. I think, when done well, it brings out the best qualities of the ocarinas natural timbre and hides some of the amateurish sound of a home recording. Not everyone agress with that, and that's ok. I just process the recording the way I think it sounds best.

Good point, I totally agree man. It's very hard to not look like a noob if you can't do vibrato or do so very poorly.
